If Hatton becomes bigger underdog, wagering he’ll upset Pacquiao becomes tempting

There are rumblings that the betting line on the May 2 Manny Pacquiao-Ricky Hatton fight is starting to list more heavily toward the favored Pac-Man. It isn’t listing far enough, however, to make gambling on Hatton wise.

Pacquiao should win. Hatton is a bit bigger, but Manny is faster, has better one-punch power (argue away) and is plenty tough enough to deal with some of the Briton’s shenanigans.

But a Hatton victory isn’t unthinkable. Give him a referee like Dave Parris, who let Hatton hold and hit Kostya Tszyu however he liked in their 2005 bout, and The Hitman could wear down anyone.

So, if you are presented 3-1 odds that Hatton can’t do it, that might be a bet worth taking. The thing is, the odds against Hatton are only at about 2-1 now, and the smart money is on Pacquiao at 2-1 or 5-2. This is why I don’t gamble.

That said, if you do see 3-1 odds against Hatton and are intrigued, wager quickly, lest thousands of Hatton fans storm Las Vegas and drive the odds toward even money.

And if you see 4-1 odds against Hatton, page me immediately.
